a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
