A numerous company from among the first, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
