A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
