A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
