a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
