The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
