The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
