The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
