The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Eager to roast; 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
