In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you the (sleeping) enwrapped one! 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 half of it, or reduce it a little; 3 or a little more; and with recitation, recite the Koran. 4 For we shall charge thee with a word of weight. 5 Surely getting up at night is the best means of subduing the self and is more suitable for uprightness in speech. 6 Verily, there is for you by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties, 7 And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 Bear patiently whatever they say, do not yield to them and keep on preaching decently to them. 10 Leave to Me those who belie, those who lead a life of pleasure, and bear with them yet a little while. 11 Indeed, with Us [for them] are shackles and burning fire 12 and food that chokes, and grievous suffering 13 on the Day when the earth and the mountains will be convulsed and the mountains will [crumble and] become like a sand-dune on the move! 14 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white- haired? 17 The heaven shall rend asunder thereby; His promise is ever brought to fulfillment. 18 Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
