The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And your garments purify! 4 And all defilement shun! 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 it will be a hard day 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he thought; 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
