The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 it will be a hard day 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
