The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then he looked around, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
