The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
