He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 So you are after him! 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 with darkness overspread: 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
