He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him. 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 you attended to him, 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Indeed, he has not fulfilled that which He has ordered him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
