He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 to a rich man, 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted, purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what did He create him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and herbage 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruit and grass - 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 and his mother and his father; 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
