He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 You pay full attention, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and in awe [of God] 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 Let him who will, pay heed to it. 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 and angelic scribes. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 then makes him to die, and buries him, 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We send down abundant water, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 but others will be gloomy 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
