He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 you attend to him, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 and in awe [of God] 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 how We pour down rain in abundance, 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 And some faces will on that Day with dust be covered, 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
