Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
