Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Dawn, 1 and the ten nights! 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And ye love wealth with inordinate love! 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 Enter then My garden." 30
