The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
