The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon as she follows in his wake, 2 by the day, when it displays it, 3 And [by] the night when it covers it 4 And the heaven and Him Who built it, 5 By the earth and Him Who spread it forth, 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 He who purifies it will prosper, 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
