The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory; 3 and by the night when it enshrouds him! 4 by the sky and how He built it 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 10 The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. 14 And He fears not its consequence. 15
