The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 And the day when it revealeth him, 3 And by the night as it conceals it (the sun); 4 And by the heaven and Him Who built it; 5 and by the earth and That which extended it! 6 And by oath of the soul and by oath of Him Who made it proper. 7 and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing! 8 Prosperous is he who purifies it, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. 15
