The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Indeed your efforts differ. 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 He verily will be content. 21
