The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night as it envelops; 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 and by that (Power) which created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
