The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and the day in splendour 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 you strive in various ways. 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
