The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it covers 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
