(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
