a large group of the earlier people 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
