The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 you strive in various ways. 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
