The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 and taught to him 5 One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he approached and descended 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 His heart lies not of what he saw; 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
