The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 stay away from sins 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he beheld, 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
