The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
99 verses, revealed in Mecca after Joseph (Yousuf) before Animals (Al-An 'aam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of a clear Book, the Quran. 1 Often will those who disbelieve wish that they had been Muslims. 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy, and let them be preoccupied with (false) hope. They will come to know! 3 And never did We destroy a town but it had a term made known. 4 No nation can outstrip its term nor can they lag behind. 5 (The unbelievers have said), "You to whom the Quran has been revealed are insane. 6 "Why bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth?" 7 We send not down the angels save with the Fact, and in that case (the disbelievers) would not be tolerated. 8 Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). 9 We sent messengers before you to the previous peoples, 10 and not a single Messenger came to them, but they mocked at him; 11 Thus do We let it (polytheism and disbelief) enter into the hearts of the Mujrimun [criminals, polytheists, pagans, etc. (because of their mockery at the Messengers)]. 12 They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples. 13 Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it, 14 they would still say, "Our eyes have been dazzled. We are bewitched." 15
