The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
