And assuredly We sent Musa with Our signs unto Fir'awn and his chiefs, and he said: verily I am an apostle of the Lord of the worlds. 46 Then when he came unto them with Our signs, behold! at them they were laughing. 47 And not a sign We shewed them but it was greater than the like thereof; and We laid hold of them with the torment that haply they might turn. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Pharaoh issued a call to his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion over Egypt belong to me, since all these running waters flow at my feet? Can you not, then, see [that I am your lord supreme]? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 Then he incited his people and they obeyed him; verily they were ever a transgressing people. 54 But when they continued to challenge Us, We inflicted Our retribution on them, and drowned them all: 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
