The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the star when it descends, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he approached and descended 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 But to Allah belongs the last (Hereafter) and the first (the world). 25
