The Cheaters (Al-Mutaffifeen)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Woe to the defrauders, 1 Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full. 2 Whereas when they give others after measuring or weighing, they give them less! 3 Do such people not realize that they will be raised up, 4 unto a mighty day 5 the Day when all men shall stand before the Sustainer of all the worlds? 6 No indeed! Verily the deeds of the wicked are in the Record locked up in the prison-house! 7 and what could make you understand what the Sijjin is? -- 8 It is a (repository of) distinctly written record. 9 Woe, on that day, to those who have rejected God's revelations 10 Those who deny the Day of Justice. 11 And none gives the lie to it but every exceeder of limits, sinful one 12 When our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' 13 By no means! Aye! encrusted upon their hearts is that which they have been earning. 14 Nay! most surely they shall on that day be debarred from their Lord. 15 Then most surely they shall enter the burning fire. 16 Then it will be said: 'this is that which ye were wont to belie.' 17 But, the record of the righteous is [preserved] in the 'Illiyyin -- 18 and what will make you understand what the 'Illiyyin is? -- 19 A book inscribed, 20 Attested by those who are brought near (unto their Lord). 21 Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure 22 [resting on couches, they will look up [to God]: 23 thou knowest in their faces the radiancy of bliss 24 They will be given to drink pure sealed wine. 25 The last thereof (that wine) will be the smell of musk, and for this let (all) those strive who want to strive (i.e. hasten earnestly to the obedience of Allah). 26 And the admixture of it is a water of Tasnim, 27 A spring whereof drink those nearest to Allah. 28 The wicked used to laugh at the believers -- 29 And, when they passed them, to wink at each other, 30 and, on returning to their people, boast about what they had done. 31 and when they saw the believers, they said: “Lo! These are the erring ones”; 32 And they were not sent to be keepers over them. 33 But on this Day the Believers will laugh at the Unbelievers: 34 as they sit on couches, gazing around. 35 Will not the disbelievers then be duly recompensed for their laughing at the believers? 36
