Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn; 1 and the ten nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And enter into My garden. 30
