The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
