The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 created man from a clot of congealed blood. 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 For he thinks he is sufficient in himself. 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Hast thou considered whether he is on the right way, 11 or enjoins true piety? 12 Hast thou considered whether he may [not] be giving the lie to the truth and turning his back [upon it]? 13 Does he not realize that God sees him? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We also shall call the infernal guards. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
