The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and (of) a Quran that makes (things) clear. 1 The disbelievers will ardently wish that if only they had been Muslims! (At the time of death / in their graves / on the Day of Resurrection.) 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy, and for aspiration to involve them in play – so they will shortly come to know. 3 Whenever We destroyed a town, a definite term had previously been decreed for it. 4 [but remember that] no community can ever forestall [the end of] its term - and neither can they delay [it]. 5 They say, "You to whom the Reminder [the Quran] has been sent down, you are surely possessed. 6 "Why do you not bring angels to us if you are of the truthful ones?" 7 We do not send down angels without reason, and if the angels descend they would not get any respite! 8 Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. 9 And assuredly We have sent apostles before thee among the sects of the ancients. 10 And whenever a Messenger came to them, they never failed to mock him. 11 Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals. 12 They do not believe in it, and indeed the example of the former people has already passed. 13 Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it, 14 They would certainly say: Only our eyes have been covered over, rather we are an enchanted people. 15
