He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 you attended to him, 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 and fearfully, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 lofty and pure, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 and olives and palms, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 and covered by darkness. 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
