Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and ten nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
