The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 and by that (Power) which created the male and female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
