The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 But save him who fears 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
