A multitude of those of old 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 “We have been penalised; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
