The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhamad), the cloaked, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 stay away from sins 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he thought; 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
