The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
